Obituary:
Marianne Springer Weller passed away at her home in Naples on January 23, 2010. She was born in Mansfield, Ohio June 11, 1916 to Frieda and William Springer. Marianne graduated from Mansfield Senior High School, January class of 1934. She attended Wittenberg University and graduated from Northwestern University, Medill School of Journalism in 1938.
Even before completing her journalism degree, Marianne worked as Society Editor for the Mansfield News Journal and following graduation had her own column at the same paper titled “Marianne Says.” She was a photographer for the Columbus Dispatch in Columbus, Ga. For 13 years, she was editor of the General Trend, internal paper for Mansfield General Hospital.
After raising her family, Marianne studied china painting and became very proficient and prolific, especially loving to paint roses. She taught china painting in Mansfield and Naples until she was 87. She served as President of the Ohio Federation of China Decorators and President of the World Organization of China Painters.
Marianne had a wonderful sense of humor and loved socializing. She was a member of Nomad Club, Buckeye Garden Club, Eva McGaughy China Painting Club, and Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield. In Naples she belonged to the Northwestern Alumnae group, Greater Naples Alumnae Panhellenic, Chi Omega Alumnae Group of Naples, and Naples Porcelain Artists.
Spiritual life was important and she was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Naples.
Marianne was preceded in death by husband John M. McCabe Jr. who was killed in action during World War II, Karl E. Weller, her husband of 49 years, and grandson Thomas W. Huston. Marianne is loved and deeply missed by daughters Kathleen Huston of Hayward, CA and Sally O’Reilly (Neil) of Naples and by granddaughters Margo Huston Graham (Donnie) of Hayward, Caroline Carvill of Naples, and great-granddaughters Lily and Sierra Graham.
The family expresses deep appreciation for the loving care given by the nursing staff from Dial-A-Nurse and thanks Avow Hospice for their care and support.
A funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 777 Mooring Line Dr. Naples on Wednesday February 3, 2010. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment will take place at Mansfield Cemetery in Mansfield, Ohio.
